My kids get a kick out of birthday decorations, don’t they? Whether it’s a giant cake, streamers, balloons, or just plain old hanging streamers, they “love” it. Whether you want to celebrate on the day of or the night of, make a special evening of it with your family and friends. We love to watch the birthday streamers wave from across the room and the cake is decorated just for the occasion.
Let your kids choose the menu for the night. What is their favorite restaurant in town and what is their favorite place to eat dinner on the night of? It’s their very first special day and they “should’t be overwhelmed by a restaurant menu. You can choose from a wide variety of cuisines from around the city to accommodate their dietary needs.
From there, it’s a pretty simple process to order a nice meal. You can either order a buffet or order a private dinner. You pick what you want to eat and where you want to drink your company. You can even order a 2-for-1 meal if you want to celebrate with friends.

You know your child best, suggest some of these ideas to your child, and encourage them to turn to their friends for suggestions. It doesn’t even have to be a party. You can keep the number of guests low and the cost of a party high by staying within a budget.
For example, my daughter (who is turning 6 this year) will be attending a family friend’s birthday party for her and two close friends. One of the friends is going to have a small group activity, like a board game, grand slam, or ping pong table tennis tournament. The other friend is going to have a full on movie party with tickets that will cost a small fortune.
All I can really do is offer words of encouragement and hope that this one special friend in their life will inspire them to go all-in on a birthday. Even if that special friend is a relative or someone they’ve never met, I do have a sneaking suspicion that they will be overwhelmed by the scale and expense of a party this big.
Even my younger children are asking for small favors from time to time. When they first started asking, I was hesitant to even ask family members to help out, but now that I’ve asked several friends to lend a helping hand, I’ve come to realize that it’s a great way to make a birthday special. If someone offers to cut the cake, shoot the video, or organize the meal, then sure, help out. But don’t expect cake, frosted glass, or crystal china. Those things usually require very special equipment and a lot of cash.
If you’re feeling tight, go there and choose a few gifts that you’ve saved and that you’ve planned on returning to the store to exchange for the others. Take the children’s lunch away from them and give them a small toy they already owns to play with, such as a shovel or rake.
Then, plan a simple “movie night” at home.

How can I celebrate my kids birthday without party?
You know your child best, and don’t worry about throwing a huge party. Many cities have birthday parties that are smaller than your child will ever attend. You can still have a big party and still have fun. There are certain activities that a child will not enjoy if they are teased or otherwise made fun of for going to a party. For example, a birthday party without a party will almost certainly have a “Toys” or “Bigger”Toys” section near the back where the child can bring in a toy and have it played with.
If a party were to involve a large party, I’ll be there to team up with other parents to make sure the kids don’t have to face the cold steel of the dance floor or the pounding of drums. I’ll be the one handing out treats and cheering for each cheerleader. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, and I’ve successfully arranged parties for my kids without a party before.
The cost of parties!!!! Some of these parties my kids attend for their friends, I can’t get over once the parents are spending on them once I start doing the math. If I’re being honest, I’m struggling to come up with an extra $500 to help cover the cost of parties for my kids. They’re going to have so many fun things to do, I’ll be skipping some of these parties.
I’ll be doing some of these tips for free so you can help your child make their birthday plans a little easier. If you’re struggling to make your child’s birthday plans, maybe you could take them to a low-cost movie theater. Or go to the children’s museum. Even if you just want to see a movie in the theater, you can still visit the theaters near your child’s birthday and buy a ticket.
If you’re feeling tight, go there and choose a movie theater to go to. They don’t have to choose between the classics and the newest releases.
